    Chain Link Fence

A chain link fence serves several purposes. Besides being a delineation of lines as all fences are; a point between ‘here’ and ‘there’ or ‘mine’ and ‘yours’; it also serves the purpose of maintaining separation without impeding the view, and at a cost that is decidedly less than traditional wood or composite fencing.

    What is Chain Link Fencing?

A chain link fence (also referred to as wire netting, a chain-wire fence) is a fence of woven galvanized or LLDPE-coated steel wires. These steel wires naturally run vertically but are bent into a sort of zigzagging pattern that allows each loop to hook with the wires on either side. This results in a diamond pattern that is characteristic of this sort of fencing. The weight of the wires used as well as the size of the diamonds determines the strength and flexibility of the fencing.

How is a Chain Link Fence Constructed?

In order to construct a chain link fence, those installing the fence drill holes (approx 10”x4’ for frost cover) in the ground into which they place heavy-duty posts in concrete, in commercial use Schedule 40 posts is specification. The fencing itself (the lengths of chain link fencing that is usually stored in larger 50’ rolls) is then attached to the metal posts in order to fence in the desired area. The line posts will be found at intervals of no more than 10 foot intervals. The best made chain link fences drill the hole then fill each with concrete into which they place the heavy duty line post so as to give the fence added stability and strength.

At each corner of the fenced in area you will find what are known as ‘terminal posts’ which are concreted even deeper and are longer (approx 1’) than the line posts and are always set in concrete. The terminal posts act as anchors holding the tension on the fence.

The Benefits of a Chain Link Fence

Some equate chain link fences with “cheap” fencing, and while it does cost less than traditional wood, composite or steel fencing a well-built chain link fence is anything but ‘cheap’ . Chain link fence can stand up to abuses that traditional fences can’t begin to compete with.

Another important aspect of a chain link fence is that it is relatively invisible. It fades into the background and takes on the color and aspect of whatever is behind it, so that it doesn’t stand out and draw the eye.

And finally, due to its construction it can be used as a support system for everything from small shrubs and vines to flowers like sweet peas, sunflowers and snapdragons that need intensive structural support while growing.
